This is one of my favourite cherry desserts because it's quick to make, I can always rely on the ingredients to be accessible at any grocery store (there are just three!), and the red colour from the cherries is so bright and inviting!

This is the type of recipe I think about making when I have kids. I can't wait to teach them how to bake and starting with easy recipes with few ingredients like this one will be a fun and rewarding way to make them!

    Why you'll love this recipe

    • Quick: It comes together quickly with just 3 simple ingredients!
    • Easy: Anyone can make this recipe! It's so easy with boxed cake mix and canned filling (no cherry pitting - yay!)
    • Delicious: Incredibly yummy with bursting cherry flavour and a tasty, crumbly topping. It also pairs great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

    Ingredients

    • Canned Cherry Pie Filling (not canned cherries, those are different!)
    • Boxed Yellow Cake Mix (vanilla/white cake mix also tastes good with this recipe)
    • Butter

See the recipe card below for the ingredient measurements.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 - Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Step 2 - Assemble: Evenly distribute the canned cherry pie filling into a 9x13 baking dish. In a serperate bowl, combine and mix the cake mix and melted butter until a crumbly texture forms and then sprinkle it over the cherry layer.

Step 3 - Bake: Bake the cobbler on the middle rack uncovered for 35-45 minutes until the crumble is golden. Let the cobbler rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

    Storage and Leftovers

Store any leftovers covered tightly with tin foil or plastic wrap (once room temperature) in the fridge for up to 1 week. To reheat, bake uncovered or microwave on a microwave-safe dish until warm.

Spoon with a scoop of cherry cobbler on it.

    Helpful Tips

    • You'll know when to stop mixing the butter and cake mix when the texture becomes crumbly.
    • Instead of melting the butter and mixing it with the cobbler, you can also just pour the dry cake mix over the cherry layer and then distribute slices of butter if you find that easier.
    • If you want your cobbler to be extra thick, you can mix the cherry pie filling with a tablespoon of corn starch.
    • The cobbler is ready when the top is golden in colour.
    • Letting the cobbler rest will give it time to cool down and thicken slightly, making it easier to scoop and eat!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to add corn starch to the pie filling?

It's not necessary, but if you prefer the cherry layer to be extra thick, you can mix a tablespoon of corn starch into it.

How do I know when cobbler is ready?

It's ready when the top is golden and the edges start to bubble from the cherry filling.

    How to serve cobbler?

Cobbler should be served warm, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream makes a delicious difference!
