I love making this apple cobbler when it gets cool outside and fall and winter roll around. I've tested this recipe many times before putting it online, and I can confidently say I've perfected it! It has the perfect ratio of applied pie filling to topping and just enough butter to make the topping perfectly golden and crispy. My friends and family fall in love with this recipe and make it on their own for their own families cause it's just too easy and tasty not too!
Why you'll love this recipe
- QUICK: This comes together in less than 5 minutes. It's a super quick dump cake recipe that tastes absolutely delicious!
- EASY: You only need three ingredients to make this recipe!! It doesn't get much easier than that!
- COZY VIBES: This comforting dessert brings so much warmth from the baked apples and flavors of fall! It'll make you want to cozy up on the couch with a warm blanket and a cup of tea or share it with friends and family during fall and winter!
Recipe Ingredients
- Apple Pie Filling: This recipe comes together quickly with a couple of cans of apple pie filling. That's right! This recipe does not require peeling, coring, or slicing apples (which can take FOREVER).
- Boxed Cake Mix: This cake mix cobbler uses the Betty Crocker yellow cake mix, but there are other options to keep in mind in case you can't find this: golden cake mix or vanilla cake mix! Both have been tested, and they taste pretty similar and just as delicious!
- Butter: The butter melts all over the dried cake mix and turns it into a golden and addictive cobbler topping that melts in your mouth with every bite!
See the recipe card below for the ingredient measurements.
Kitchen Equipment
- Baking Dish: You'll need a 9x13 baking dish to bake the cobbler.
- Can Opener: To open the cans of apple pie filling.
- Knife: For slicing the butter.
- Measuring Spoons and Cups: These are used to measure the ingredients.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350° F.
- Assemble: In a 9x13 baking dish, evenly distribute the canned apples (we like to sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon on top too but this is optional). Sprinkle the cake mix over the apples and then scatter the slices of butter on top of the cake mix.
- Bake: Bake uncovered on the middle rack for 45-55 minutes until the cobbler topping is solid and golden. Rest for 10 minutes before serving, and top with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
Storage and Leftovers
Once completely cooled, store any leftovers covered with plastic wrap or tin foil in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Expert Tips
- Add some cinnamon! Not all canned apple pie fillings include any type of spice, so if you really enjoy that apple-cinnamon combo at fall, feel free to sprinkle some cinnamon over top of the apples as you assemble the cobbler!
- Evenly distribute the butter. You'll want bits of butter all over the top of the cobbler to ensure the cobbler topping bakes cohesively and there are isn't any spots of cake mix anywhere!
- Bake on the middle rack. To ensure the top of the cobbler doesn't burn, you should bake it on the middle rack of the oven.
- Be patient! It's hard to do, but the longer you let the cobbler set will give it more time to thicken before serving. Noone likes runny cobbler!
- Switch up the fruit! The apple pie filling can be easily replaced by any other pie filling or fresh fruit! Keep this recipe in your back pocket if you like it because it's such a versatile recipe and super easy to make with cake mix as the cobbler topping!
Frequently Asked Questions
You can freeze it once it's fully cooled, however it's not recommended as the cobbler topping will not thaw properly and will likely be soggy.
Usually, a cobbler is watery if no thickening ingredient, such as corn starch, was tossed with the fruit. However, in the case of this recipe the canned apples are mixed with cornstarch so it shouldn't be runny. However, if it is still runny, that may be because it didn't rest long enough after baking. If you give it some more time to rest, it will thicken up.
No you don't! Canned apple pie filling contains soft apples ready for baking purposes.
