I've made many guac recipes over the years, but this one is my favourite because it's made with five ingredients! I've tested this recipe many times to perfect it, and it has a great balance of heat that complements the fresh guac amazingly!
I often make this during the summer because it's cold and refreshing for snacking in the heat, but it's also one of my go-to game day snacks to share with friends, and they love it!
Ingredients
- AVOCADO: Fresh and ripe avocados are mashed for the base of this guac.
- LIME JUICE: The juice of fresh limes is mixed into the guacamole for a refreshing citrus flavor and some acidity that helps cut through the richness of the avocado.
- JALAPENO PEPPER: Diced jalapenos are included to make the guac spicy and flavorful but if you don't like spice, feel free to omit the jalapenos!
- RED ONION: Chopped red onion makes it with flavor, cut through the thickness of the guac, and its color complements the green color of the guac beautifully!
- CILANTRO: Cilantro in the guac adds a delicious aroma and flavor.
See the recipe card below for the ingredient measurements.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Mash: Slice the avocado lengthwise, remove the pits, and scoop out the avocado flesh into a mixing bowl. Mash it with a fork and sprinkle it with a pinch of salt.
- Combine and Mix: Add the remaining ingredients, a pinch of salt to taste and mix until combined.
- Serve: Serve in a small bowl with tortilla chips or use as a condiment for tacos and nachos.

Storage and Leftovers
If you have leftover guacamole, you can store it covered tightly with plastic wrap in the fridge for up to 2 days. However, guacamole is best served the day it’s made to avoid browning of the avocado. If you plan to store it for a couple of days, add an avocado pit and a lime wedge to keep it from browning.
Alternative Ingredients
- Tomatoes: Add some diced tomatoes for juicy freshness and acidity that will cut through the richness of the avocado in the guac.
- Garlic: Mix in some minced fresh garlic for a punch of flavor that’ll complement the other ingredients in the guacamole.
- Cumin: Some ground cumin will add a warm and delicious flavor and aroma to the guac.
