Cream cheese frosting is my favourite frosting (I can't even remember the last time I've made just a regular frosting). Don't get me wrong I love most frostings, like chocolate frosting, vanilla frosting, but cream cheese frosting is just the best...

I've been making this cream cheese frosting for years! I use it on a ton of my frosted desserts, just like this carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, my moist apple spice cake, these frosted gingerbread cookies, and these pumpkin spice cake bars with cream cheese frosting!

    Ingredients

    • Cream Cheese
    • Butter (I usually use salted butter in all my recipes, but unsalted works too)
    • Icing Sugar (also known as confectioners sugar or powdered sugar)

See the recipe card below for the ingredient measurements.

    Instructions

Butter and cream cheese mixed in a bowl.
    1. To a large mixing bowl, add the softened cream cheese and butter and mix on high speed until it's light and fluffy.
Cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar mixed in a bowl.
    2. Add the powdered sugar and mix on low speed until smooth (do not over-mix). Wait until baked goods are completely cooled before frosting.

    Storage & Leftovers

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week or in the freezer for up to three months.

To remix leftovers, just transfer to a mixing bowl and mix with an electric hand mixer on low just until it's incorporated (don't overmix).

    Helpful Tips

    • Avoid overmixing the frosting otherwise the texture will be ruined. To avoid this, mix the frosting on the lowest setting, just until it's incorporated.
    • Wait until baked goods are completely cooled to frost them, otherwise the frosting will melt.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can you freeze homemade frosting?

Yes, it should be stored in an airtight container and can be frozen for up to 3 months.

    How to fix runny frosting?

If the frosting seems runny, you can thicken it by adding more powdered sugar.

    How to thin out frosting?

If you find the frosting too thick/stiff, you can loosen it up by adding a little bit of milk until it reaches the desired consistency.
